Senator Hamida Ali Kibwana was elected unopposed as Chairperson of the Senate Standing Committee on Roads, Transportation and Housing during a committee meeting at Parliament Buildings on 15 September 2026. The Senate formally announced the election during proceedings on 17 September. Source
The leadership change followed the departure of former committee chairperson Senator Eddy Oketch. Contemporary reporting states that Senator Kibwana thanked fellow committee members and indicated that she would work collaboratively in discharging the committee’s mandate. SourceSource
The committee examines matters within the Senate’s assigned remit for roads, transportation and housing. Its work can include the consideration of parliamentary business, scrutiny of relevant institutions and preparation of committee reports or recommendations through Senate procedures.
The appointment adds a defined leadership responsibility to Senator Kibwana’s parliamentary work since she joined the 13th Senate in 2022. She had previously raised questions concerning the need to align urban housing growth with supporting infrastructure, including essential services in developing settlements. Source
Updates on the committee’s subsequent work will be reported as official documents and proceedings become available.
